Four Comal ISD Robotics Teams Advance To State Competition

November 14, 2023 - Four Comal ISD robotics teams advanced to the BEST of Texas Robotics state competition on October 28 at the San Antonio BEST tournament. The state competition takes place November 30-December 2 in Dallas.

The teams include two middle schools, Smithson Valley Middle and Spring Branch Middle, and two high schools, Canyon Lake High and Hill Country College Preparatory High.

This year’s challenge is ‘Incision Decision’ where the field simulates a human body that consists of a heart, a brain, arteries and veins. The team is tasked with a list of surgical objectives including a brain biopsy, cardiac valve repair, coronary artery bypass, cardiac ablation and more.

The San Antonio BEST Award Results had SBMS in first place with SVMS in second and HCCPHS in fourth. Smithson Valley High School made the top 10 at eighth with 36 teams participating.

In the Robot Competition Results, CLHS was in second place with the highest point value in any one round in the competition and received a $50,000 student scholarship from St. Mary’s University. The SBMS team came in third, and the SVMS team came in fourth.

In other awards at SA BEST, SVMS received the BEST t-shirt award; HCCPHS received the Founders Award; CLHS received the Good Lookin’ John Wigand Most Photogenic award; and SBMS received the Best Table Display and Interview award as well as the Best Use of the Game Theme award.

Other Comal ISD teams which participated in SA BEST represented Memorial Early College High School, Pieper Ranch Middle School, Pieper High School and Smithson Valley High School.
