May 22, 2023 - Two Comal ISD students have been named National Merit Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Program - Noah Bliss from Davenport High School and Mason Mock from Smithson Valley High School.
Bliss and Mock are receiving National Merit $2,500 Scholarships. Bliss plans to attend the University of Texas, Austin to study aerospace engineering, and Mock plans to attend Texas A&M University to study electrical engineering.
Only 7,250 National Merit finalists are selected to become National Merit Scholars in the selection process that begins when more than 1.5 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT test in the 11th grade. From that number, 50,000 students with the highest scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program as either Commended students or Semifinalists.
From that point, more than 15,000 Semifinalists are notified that they have advanced to the Finalist standing.
All winners of Merit Scholarship awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments. A variety of information is available for NMSC to evaluate: The Finalist’s academic record, information about the school's curriculum and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay.
